The Skills tab

How to use the Skills tab well, step by step, from the guidebook inside the app.

The Practice tab keeps sessions by category and skill, times them while you play, and watches spacing and spread, because a skill fades faster than a fact and effort spread thin builds nothing. The note on each session is where the deliberate part lives.

Start here

Name the skills, log the sessions, and write down what you fixed.

  1. Log a session with its category and skill

Log opens the practice composer; a category (piano, climbing, Spanish) and the skill worked on give the Categories chip its breakdown and the strip its count of skills in rotation.

Where: Practice tab › action row

  2. Write the one thing that failed

In the notes, name the error you stopped at and what you did about it. The pianists who played best the next day were the ones who located errors, slowed down and repeated; the note is that method at the scale of a session.

    Where: Practice composer › notes

  3. Keep the number of skills small

The Categories chip shows where the hours went. Deliberate practice targets one weakness at a time, and the strip reacts when more than five skills are in rotation in a fortnight.

Where: Practice tab › chips under the stat card

  4. Read the strip, then ask why

The line under the action row is one research-backed tip chosen for your own numbers. Tap Why to read the fuller finding, the studies behind it with links, and the reason this tip was picked today.

Where: Practice tab › guidance strip

  5. Tune the strip to you

Settings under Why sets how often the tip changes (every visit, once a day, once a week), pins it to one theme, or turns it off for this tab alone.

Where: Practice tab › guidance strip › Why

Logging well

Short sessions, mixed skills, and the cold first attempt.

  1. Log sessions separately, even on one day

Two half-hour sessions with rest between beat an hour straight, and the tab can only see that when each is its own entry. The plus on a day in the list adds one to the day it happened.

Where: Practice tab › a day in the list

  2. Log the cold first attempt

At the start of each session, try last time's passage cold and note how it went. That attempt, not the warm best at the end, is the measure of the previous session, and it is what the log should keep.

    Where: Practice composer › notes

  3. Use a routine for the session shape

The Routines chip holds a checklist you run with Play: the cold attempt, two or three skills rotated, feedback on every other try, the error isolated and slowed. Run it and the session has the shape the trials favour.

Start against Log

Start times the session as you practise; Log records one afterwards.

  1. Start when you pick up the instrument

Start opens the session with a running timer: the in-progress chip appears in the action row, the Clock pill and the phone strip show it, and it reads Resume while paused. Stop when quality drops; the hours after that are practice in doing it badly.

Where: Practice tab › action row

  2. Log the rest

Log opens the full form with a blank duration for a lesson or a session you did not time. Both paths make the same entry.

Where: Practice tab › action row

Goals and habits

Sessions a week, one skill in focus, and a habit for the slot.

  1. Set the goal in sessions a week

New goal inside Goals is prefilled for practice. A goal in sessions rather than hours enforces spacing, and it is the one the trials would recognise.

    Where: Practice tab › Goals

  2. Make the slot a habit

On the Habits tab, add a habit for the practice slot at a fixed time and place and tick it. The habit is what gets you to the instrument; what happens next is the deliberate part.

    Where: Habits tab

  3. Keep the choice yours

Learners given choices over practice order and feedback learn faster. Pick the piece, the drill or the route you want, put it in the routine yourself, and treat a coach's plan as material rather than orders.

Reading your numbers

Sessions this week, Hours this week and Categories, with last week beside them.

  1. This week against last

The stat card counts sessions and hours this week, with the change against last week, and the categories touched. The strip reacts to three days without a session, to weeks under two hours and to more than five skills in rotation.

  2. Retention, not performance

A passage that is clean cold on Monday after Friday's work is learned; one that needs ten warm-up runs is not yet. The cold attempts in your notes are the trend that matters, not the best run at the end of a warm session.

  3. Look across tabs in Statistics

Statistics under Functions › Analysis puts your practice hours beside every other aspect: What stands out lists the strongest links and drifts this period, Forecast says where the metric lands a week out at this pace, and Guidance names the aspect whose numbers are weakest.

Where: Functions › Analysis › Statistics

The agent and automations

What the agent can do with this tab, and what runs without you.

  1. Ask the agent about this tab

Open the Agent under Functions › Analysis, or press the a key on the web, and ask in plain words: "Which skill have I practised most this fortnight, and which one is going cold?". The agent reads this tab only while the Practice switch under May read is on, and the Context panel shows exactly what it was sent.

    Where: Agent › Settings

  2. Let it suggest, then decide

Anything the agent wants to add or change lands in Suggestions with an accept or reject on each item. Under Does on its own you can let a kind of change apply straight away; bulk edits always show a preview and keep an undo for a day.

    Where: Agent › Settings

  3. Put the routine on Autopilot

Autopilot runs the Morning plan, Evening tidy, Weekly review and Drift nudges while the app is open, each with its own time, instruction and Apply without asking switch; Add a job makes one of your own, such as a practice check every Sunday.

Where: Agent › Settings › In the background

  4. Get the week by email

Email automations in Settings sends a weekly or daily digest with the strongest links, drifts and goal paces across every tab, and can alert you once when something is slipping or when this tab goes quiet for three days.

    Where: Settings › Email automations
